Open Question: Coastal road trip from Los Angeles to Seattle - I have ideas but I need a little help?

Forgive for asking a similar question within two days... My boyfriend and I are taking a road trip from Los Angeles to Seattle beginning Dec. 27, 2008. We have decided to make this a pacific coast road trip due to the time of year it is. We are fine with rain and want to avoid snow as much as possible while driving. We plan to stop in San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle. Lodging - I enjoy quaint little towns. In fact, we are sure we are staying one night in Yachats, OR. We are considering Hillsboro, OR because of the Helvetia Tavern (featured in the guide Hamburger America). I doesn't have to be on the coast exactly but close to it. Ocean view is great but not a must. Food - Any restaurants I just have to stop at along the coast? Unfortunately the only seafood I like is shrimp but I do enjoy an authentic atmosphere! Missions - Besides the Santa Barbara Mission (been there), would you recommend any? Are there any mission north of San Fran? Wharfs - Are there any wharfs/piers (whatever) I should visit. I went to a wharf in Massachusetts once... Overall I am looking for things that are things the locals would say, "This is what our town should be famous for." I like touristy things too...I figure that's what the big cities are for. Please advise! Thanks.... Read More »
